ACCESSING EMPLOYEE COMPENSATIONS FROM NSITF: A PRACTICAL GUIDE

The Employee Compensation Act repealed the old Workmen Compensation Act (1987) and ushered in a new regime of a government (NSITF) managed employees compensation scheme. The Act provides for a robust compensation for employees in cases of injuries, death, occupational diseases and mental stress in the course of employment, including compensation for loss of productivity to employers and medical expenses borne by them. The Act obligates every employer of labour to contribute 1% of their payroll to the scheme and which contribution is managed by the NSITF. However, many employers may not be able to take full advantage of the scheme due to lack of a proper understanding of the workings of the Employee Compensation scheme, especially the basic requirements for a successful and prompt claims settlement and compensation. An otherwise valid application for compensation may be lost or unduly delayed due to time lapse in bringing the application, or due to incomplete documentations.

This seminar exposes the participants to the fundamentals of the Employee Compensation scheme, the workings of the scheme, the statutory procedures for making claims including practical guidance for making successful claims.
